"He is responding well to the treatments." David commented. "Although it is
a slow process."
Allura agreed to that statement. It was slow but it had to be.
Lotor was enclosed in a tube filled with gelatinous liquid. The conditions
were almost similar to a womb, for that's what it was. It had to be in order
for his damaged body to heal. He was naked as the day he was born and Allura
had had to help Dr. Hawkins with him. She never thought she'd see the day
when she would actually handle Lotor's body in that fashion.
She, who never
wanted to be near him for fear of him, now helped to care for him. He was
helpless and this made it safe although some of the thoughts about him were
not what one would call pure she had to admit.
Despite his injuries, he was beautiful in body and perhaps that was why a
part of herself would not admit it. She shoved those thoughts away and she
simply stayed to help care for him even though David had said she did not
need to.
Allura told herself it was because she wanted him brought to justice
afterwards, but she knew deep down that it was something else, something she
couldn't quite define.
As far as her lodgings here, David had provided a sleeping area in the large cavern which was perfect. It
was cool in the heat of the day and warm during the chilly nights of Tarsus.
The only thing that chilled her were the sound of those creatures that came
around every so often. Otherwise things were good. They had plenty of
supplies and she kept in touch with Coran. The news of the guys being
transferred did not surprise her, but it saddened her. It was as if an era
had come and gone. Maybe it had.
What disturbed her the most was the fact that Amalgamus had won the elections
and that Zarkon was his aide. If it had been anyone but Zarkon she would not
have worried. An aide was an aide. But Zarkon was conniving and he was
secretive. What could stop him from controlling Amalgamus?
She chided herself. She was not giving him the benefit of the doubt. She knew
she wasn't, but she remembered that long ago night of the ball, his promises
and the cold blooded way he had killed her parents. It had been only the
intervention of the guys and Voltron that prevented her from falling into his
clutches. He hadn't changed, she could feel it and Coran's warning about him did not help her fears any.
David assured her that they were safe and that when Lotor was deemed ready
for travel she could take him back to Arus or wherever he was to go. As
Tarsus had been abandoned for years with the exception of the hospital, very
few knew he was even here or even alive for that matter. He'd become expert
in under the table dealings and his hospital had more supplies than one man
would need. Still, Allura worried that someone would show up, take Lotor and
simply butcher him up anyway.
It was late afternoon and David went outdoors. He occasionally took forays
outside to gather the medicinal herbs that grew wild among the blasted out
She looked at the chron and frowned. It was nearing dusk. Allura knew that
David carried a laser rifle with him anytime he went outside but still with
those mutated things around, it wasn't safe. Perhaps she'd better go topside
and see if he was all right. She took her small laser pistol and activated
it. She checked on Lotor and carefully went to the upper chambers, unlocking
the steel door.
The dusty air inside the dilapidated building made her want to sneeze but she
stiffled it and peered out the doorway. The sky was a light purple and she
could see the faintness of the twin moons in the sky. She frowned. David
wouldn't stay out that long. Something must have happened!
Suddenly the wind was knocked out of her as something from out of nowhere
tackled her She screamed as she came face to face with a creature. It's fangs
were barely an inch from her face and it's fetid breath made her gag. The
creature screamed with rage and Allura struggled to bring her pistol up.
Before she could do anything, the creature was yanked off her and she heard
the creature scream as the hiss of a laser tore through it. The creature fell
with a thud and Allura sat up, knowing that it was dead. She looked up and
expected to find David, but instead she saw -
Zarkon!
He stood in the doorway and Allura saw a crumpled heap beside him. He merely
said, "Your doctor friend met with an accident - one of those creatures I
believe, Princess. I will carry him inside."
Allura had no choice but to let him do so.
